How does a water softener work?

A water softener works with a filter that is filled with resin pellets. When the water runs through these granules, the lime and magnesium are removed from the water and you get soft water as a result. The filters are then automatically cleaned with salt. You can buy these machines on an electronic basis, but also on a mechanical basis. Electronic machines look at your water use and adjust their program accordingly, while mechanical devices work with a time clock that you can set yourself. The maintenance of both machines is the same.

Have the costs of maintenance done?

The work during maintenance

The water softener will, of course, be fully checked during maintenance. All parts are cleaned and lubricated where necessary and worn parts are replaced. The salt is also topped up and a water test is done to check the hardness of the water and to see if it contains any bacteria. It is recommended to repeat this annually, with intensive use perhaps more.

Do maintenance costs yourself

You can also choose to do the maintenance yourself. This is not difficult. Cleaning and lubricating the parts are very easy to do and you can buy a water test yourself to check the water. Topping up salt is also not a difficult task. The following table shows the costs of the various components that you need if you are going to keep the water softener yourself.

In addition, you also theoretically lose money for grease and cleaning products, but these are negligible. Doing maintenance yourself is therefore considerably cheaper and a simple job that anyone can do.

The costs of a new water softener

There are two common types of water softener that you can purchase. An electronic machine is the most expensive, but it looks at your water use and adjusts its program accordingly. This will therefore never use too much salt and filters as required. A mechanical water softener is cheaper, but it works with a timing mechanism that will only filter the water at set times. You can set this pretty well in the long run, but you will use more salt for the times you filter too much. The following table shows these costs, including VAT.

Keep the costs low

By doing the maintenance of your water softener yourself, you can save quite a bit on costs, but there are more ways in which you can keep the total price of a new water softener under control.

Find a second-hand machine :

you can find a decent electric water softener for $ 200 each and a mechanical for $100 each if you make some effort to find them second-hand. You will, therefore, more than half the costs.

Start saving :

from the moment you switch on the water softener, you will get an average of 30 percent more lifespan of your appliances and you can certainly save € 50 a year on cleaning, washing and beauty products.

Hire a local installation company :

with this, you save on the call-out costs, or you can completely avoid them. You also support the local economy and have the necessary regional knowledge and contacts at hand.
